Alstroemeria psittacina 'Variegata' (Alstroemeriaceae)
Variegated Parrot Lily
Fall, winter and spring are the seasons for Variegated Parrot Lily. Attractive blue-green foliage with irregular creamy edges pops up in early fall, tops out at 12-15", and persists all winter. In spring, exotic narrow trumpet-shaped flowers, dark red with green tips, burst into brilliant color. Popular in floral arrangements, this is a great cut flower that lasts. After flowering plants enter summer dormancy, so interplant with summer perennials for continuing interest. This is a treasure for southern gardeners who long for winter foliage. Mulch for winter protection; plant in well-drained soil with organic amendments. Tubers multiply, yielding plenty to dig and divide amongst friends.
