(an-dro-PO-gon ger-ARE-dee-eye)
Big Bluestem

This is the king of the Andropogon clan. Talk about a tough plant! Full sun to part shade, moist to dry, and any soil; all of these conditions are fine for Big Bluestem. Give the king some room; he has beefy 2-3' basal foliage with red stems that top out at 4-8'. 1/2" wide blades are green to bluish-green, turn orange in fall, and bronze-red in winter. Inflorescences open red in the fall landscape. Clump-forming; use in meadow or prairie landscapes.
