Symphyotrichum puniceum (Asteraceae)
A large native aster for late season blues. Unlike most asters who want life high and dry, Swamp Aster loves moisture and adorns miles and miles of ditches in the NC mountains through August and September. Adapts well to average garden soil in sun or bright shade. Bushy 4-6’ plants typically develop purpley-red stems, and are topped by bountiful sprays of blue-to-pale-purple daisies. Especially beautiful interplanted with tall native grasses like Panicums. (Formerly Aster puniceus.)
