Baptisia sphaerocarpa (Fabaceae)
(bap-TIS-ee-ah sphere-o-CAR-pa)
Yellow Wild Indigo
Neatly rounded plants bear upright racemes of banana yellow pea-flowers in spring. In the wild, this lovely species is concentrated in eastern TX, OK, AR, and eastward along the Gulf Coast. With a taproot that goes to China and an iron constitution, it thrives in well-drained, lean and gravelly soils. A real show-stopper, and well worth the time it takes to get established.
