Bignonia capreolata var. atrosanguinea (Bignoniaceae)
Burgundy Cross Vine
Native to rich, moist woodlands, Cross Vine offers shiny evergreen foliage smothered in clusters of 2" trumpet-shaped flowers in late spring. Run it up a dead cedar skeleton, a trellis, a tree at woodland's edge or a sunny wall to enjoy the display. Hummers are attracted to the blooms. Grow in soil amended with organic matter, and prune back by half in spring if more controlled growth is desired. Offer a protected location in zone 6 to prevent winter leaf drop. These are cuttings from our garden specimen, a variety with striking, dark, brick-red flowers.
