Calycanthus floridus (Calycanthaceae)
Sweet Betsy, Sweetshrub
Endemic to moist woodlands in the southeastern US, Sweetshrub is an old-timey southern favorite. Its form is dense, mounded, more broad than tall, with dark-green oval leaves. In spring, curious 2" maroon flowers perfume the garden with a tropical aroma — ours are seed grown, so scent varies from plant to plant. Yellow fall color is followed by seed pods that add winter interest. Plant close by to best enjoy the sweet scent, or use it to fill a shady corner. Fragrance increases in afternoon and evening hours. AKA Sweet Bubby Bush.
