Danae racemosa (Ruscaceae)
(DAY-nay race-a-MOS-a)
Poet's Laurel

Danae was used in ancient Greek and Roman times to crown exemplary athletes, orators and poets. We love this 3' shrub for its wonderful common name, Poet's Laurel. Just as nice is its elegant, graceful form and shiny evergreen foliage; a year-round standout in the shade garden. White racemes of bloom are subtle, but give way to showy, 1/2" cherry-tomato-red fruits that decorate the shrub in fall and early winter. Foliage is beautiful cut for winter arrangements. A well-behaved, hard-to-find beauty, and an excellent choice for the woodland garden.
