Helenium flexuosum (Asteraceae)
Purple Headed Sneezeweed
Nichette emeritus Dianne Ford is crazy about this compact species, with its unusual purplish-brown disk flowers and drooping chrome-yellow petals. Plants produce flat rosettes of wavy leaves, and flowering stalks have prominently protruding ridges. Branching and flowering is more profuse if plants are cut back by 1/3 in early summer. Plant in full sun to dappled shade in loosened, average soil. Very distinctive — and we promise they won’t make you sneeze!
