Iris cristata (Iridaceae)
(EYE-ris kris-TAH-ta)
Dwarf Crested Iris

This diminutive 4-6" native Iris thrives in lightly shaded gardens. Light blue flowers with fringed yellow or white crests appear in early spring, followed by attractive miniature foliage throughout the growing season. Because of its small size, place along pathways or in nooks between rockery. Plant the rhizome "high" or at ground level rather than burying in the soil. Prefers lean soil with little or no fertilizer except natural mulches. Pleasing companions include Wild Bleeding Heart, Eastern Native Columbine or Green and Gold. Native.
