Liatris squarrosa (Asteraceae)
(lie-A-tris sqa-ROS-a)
Scaly Blazing Star

This distinctive member of the Blazing Star clan has flower heads spread along the flowering stem giving the appearance of fuzzy, spidery, purple balls. In midsummer, plants provide vertical 3-4' soft spikes with hundreds of flowers. Compared to their cousin, Liatris spicata, the flowers are fewer but larger and more detailed. Foliage is similar: narrow leaves spiral around tall stems. Adaptable and easy. This wide ranging species is native from the East Coast west to Texas, Colorado and the Dakotas.
