Lonicera fragrantissima (Caprifoliaceae)
An old-timey favorite that fills the air with a heavenly fragrance in late winter. A large and adaptable shrub — useful as a hedge, screen, or backdrop in the shrub border. Honeybees especially appreciate the winter nectar, and the first butterflies to arrive in spring make a beeline for the small, creamy white blossoms. Force branches indoors for a fragrant treat. Prune for shape and size after bloom, or leave its large arching form. Round dark green leaves persist through fall and into winter here in the South, and contrast with bright green new growth in spring. AKA Sweet-Breath-of-Spring.
