Mitchella repens (Rubiaceae)
(mi-CHEL-la RE-penz)
Partridgeberry

Opposite pairs of shiny evergreen leaves run along trailing stems that carpet the ground in shady areas. Small bright-white tubular flowers appear in twos from spring into summer, developing into single red berries that nestle amongst the foliage through fall and into winter. Mitchella ranges over the entire eastern US, and is happiest in average-to-rich, moderately moist soil in part-to-full shade. A delicate and underused native groundcover for rockery, spilling down shady banks, or running along pathways.
