Platycodon grandiflorus (Campanulaceae)
From Gretchen's garden comes a very floriferous, robust, 4 foot tall perennial that produces handfulls of puffy blue flowers. Beginning at the tips of the stems, buds slowly swell into 2 inch "balloons", which pop open into bell-shaped flowers. Keeps blooming all summer. The color is fantastic: lavender-violet flowers accented with darker violet veins. Allow to ramble in sunny areas, encourage to twine through low shrubs, or stake in the middle of the border to create arching sprays. Great companions include Hemerocallis citrina and colorful Verbenas. Easy, and a great, cool, violet color for hot summery days. Deadhead to encourage rebloom through fall. Native to Japan and China.
