Rudbeckia maxima (Asteraceae)
(rud-BEK-ee-a MAX-i-ma)
Cabbage Leaf Coneflower

Hailing from east TX, OK and LA, this unique and dramatic Black-Eyed Susan is almost unbeatable for tough and showy architectural interest in the sunny garden. Eye-catchingly large and waxy blue-green foliage resembles cabbage or collard leaves, with 6-7' flower spikes shooting skyward like rockets in midsummer. Bright-yellow drooping petals with enormous elongated cones give this species a very distinguished look, bringing in tons of birds to perch and peck. Plants prefer average to rich sites with decent moisture, but are surprisingly adaptive and drought-tolerant.
