Scutellaria lateriflora (Lamiaceae)
Mad Dog Skullcap
Lovely blue-violet blooms cover this skullcap from summer to fall. Distinctively lobed flowers appear to have a hood or cap covering, giving plants in this genus their common name. This species is distinguished by its petite flowers, serrated leaves and somewhat trailing habit with full, abundant foliage; it is adaptable but prefers average-to-rich, moist-to-wet soils. The most commonly referenced species for traditional medicinal use. (AKA Side-Flowering Skullcap.)
