Spiraea bumalda 'Magic Carpet' (Rosaceae)
(spi-REE-a boo-MALL-da)
Magic Carpet Spirea

Brilliant color gleams from these tidy, compact shrubs. Chartreuse foliage is haloed by pinkish-red new growth; in May and June, the electricity intensifies when dark rosy-pink flowers cover the plant. Wiry stems offer winter interest in the garden, creating a true four-season shrub. Mature size of 3' x 3' makes this a great spirea for small gardens, showy enough to stand alone as a specimen or fabulous in a sweeping line. Trail some bright purple Verbena 'Homestead' beneath for eye-opening fun. Not native.
