Sporobolus heterolepis (Poaceae)
This North American prairie grass is most elegant, with fine thread-like leaves creating dense mounds 1-1.5' tall. Medium green leaves transform to russet orange in fall, with airy panicles blooming 2' above the foliage. Tolerant of a variety of soils including clay, this clump-forming grass stays tight and full, requiring no division for years. Grows well in sun or light shade and is drought-tolerant once established. What more could one ask of a grass? (Come up earlier, maybe? Sporbolus emerges later in spring, so please be patient.)
