Typhonium giganteum (Araceae)
(tie-PHONE-ee-um ji-GAN-tee-um)
Chinese Jack-in-the-Pulpit

This unusual Chinese aroid has huge heart-shaped leaves that emerge in summer, followed by a wonderfully weird bloom. With a form similar to our native Jack-In-The-Pulpit, its large and frilly maroon spathe surrounds a dark purple spadix beneath the leaves; large seed heads packed with lovely purple berries follow. Place in a lightly shaded area with rich soil, or more sun with greater moisture. Seeds of this exotic collector’s plant were shared with us by Joe Hollis of Mountain Gardens in Burnsville, NC, who specializes in growing Appalachian and Chinese medicinal plants.
