Verbena canadensis 'Homestead Purple' (Verbenaceae)
(ver-BEE-na kan-a-DEN-sis)
Purple Verbena

Dr. Allan Armitage and Dr. Michael Dirr found this time-tested Verbena at a country homestead in GA. It is very vigorous, both in growth and flower production. In mild winters it remains evergreen and continues to bloom. This low, spreading Verbena of 6-12" bears rich, deep purple flowers early spring until frost and softens edges of borders in sun. Leaves are also attractive: deep green and scalloped. Allow the foliage to remain throughout the winter; tidy up by removing any dieback in early spring. An early nectar source for the first of the butterflies. Native.
