Wisteria frutescens 'Amethyst Falls' (Fabaceae)
Amethyst Falls' is a well-behaved native Wisteria, unlike its aggressive Asian cousin. Thin whip-like stems coil up any available support and harden into a woody trunk. Fine, pinnate leaves are downy when they emerge, and are followed by globular clusters of deep-purple-to-lilac flowers that bloom into midsummer. Flowers on new wood, so may be thinned or shaped at almost any time. Train this vine up a sturdy arbor or trellis and enjoy its evocative abundance.
