Dicksonia antarctica (Dicksoniaceae)
Tasmanian Tree Fern
Primitive. Tropical. Big. A most spectacular plant, this giant fern makes you feel like a traveller in the Lost World. Common in the cool wet, mountain forests of New Zealand and Tasmania, this fern is actually somewhat tough and adaptable. Dark green, lacy fronds up to 7' long unfurl from a woody central trunk which gradually grows up to 15' or more. Hardy in zone 8 and perhaps some of zone 7, it has been successfully grown in climates as diverse as Great Britain, the Pacific Northwest, central California and central Texas. Site carefully in a shady, protected place, damp but not soggy, and it should do well. Also a stunning specimen plant for poolside, patio, or a large container.
