Loropetalum chinense 'Ruby' (Hamamelidaceae)
(lo-ro-PET-a-lum chin-EN-se)
Chinese Fringe Flower
A bushy upright evergreen shrub with graceful arching stems. Perhaps the smallest loropetalum cultivar, only 3-5' tall, it is well-suited for foundation plantings and low hedges. Prune and shape after bloom to maintain architectural beauty. Leaves emerge as a bright ruby-red and darken to a deep maroon by fall. Flowers are a hot fuchsia-pink and resemble Witch Hazel blossoms. Prefers moist acidic well-drained soil in sun to part-shade, but is not too fussy. A great three-season shrub for gardens in zone 7 and warmer.
