Sarracenia minor (Sarraceniaceae)
Hooded Pitcher Plant
The pitchers of this species are "hooded" creating a darkened chamber, and the back of the hood has opaque areas which let the light in, to draw the insect prey farther into the trap. A widely distributed species, Sarracenia minor is found from the Carolina coastal plain down to the Florida Panhandle. Pitchers are about a foot tall, green, with copper tones towards the top. Butter-yellow flowers coincide with emerging pitchers in spring. Native.
