Bignonia capreolata (Bignoniaceae)
Shiny evergreen foliage with clusters of 2" trumpet-shaped flowers in late spring. Blooms are mostly yellow with some red in the throat. Climbs via tendrils rather than twining. Hummingbirds love the tubular blooms as much as those of its cousin, Trumpet Creeper. Grow in soil amended with organic matter, and prune back by half in spring if more controlled growth is desired. Plant in a protected location in its colder range to prevent winter leaf drop. Often overwinters with a purplish-red cast.
