Delphinium exaltatum (Ranunculaceae)
Every gardener loves the cool blue spikes of Delphinium, but for Southerners, they seem but a dream in our heat. Tall Larkspur is the best chance, native to the Appalachians of VA and NC, up to PA. We've seen the 6' gentian-blue towers of bloom peeking out along the edge of the Blue Ridge Parkway July-September. In the garden, it works best in bright shade with moist humusy soil, adding height in a cottage-style part-shade border. Lobed foliage adds texture and holds up through summer.
