Verbena canadensis 'Homestead Carpet Red' (Verbenaceae)
(ver-BEE-na kan-a-DEN-sis)

'Homestead Purple' has long been a successful staple in our zone 7 garden. Its cousin, 'Homestead Carpet Red' is rated hardy to zone 7b, so site in a protected area for the best success in wintering over. A vigorous grower, with dark green crinkly leaves, 'Carpet Red' snakes out across sunny areas, around rocks and walls or over the edges of containers. It thrives in summer heat and drought, blooming spring to frost with clusters of incredibly bright, eye-popping red flowers. Deadhead for increased bloom, and cut back longer stems for a flush of new growth.
