Panicum virgatum 'Summer Sunrise' (Poaceae)
'Summer Sunrise' is small for a Panicum at 3-4', with thick stems and wide leaves that give it a sturdy upright appearance. Foliage emerges green and is topped by showy pink-red panicles in late summer. In fall, tops of blades turn a deep burgundy red; winter freezes turn the entire grass a straw color. Tolerant of moist sites, it can even withstand intermittent flooding. Introduced by Kurt Bluemel. (AKA Panicum 'Squaw'.)
