Vernonia noveboracensis 'White Lightning' (Asteraceae)
New York Ironweed
This white flowering form of New York Ironweed is grown from a seed strain developed by Jelitto, and is topped with pure white, fluffy blooms late-summer to mid-fall. Especially suited to sunny, wet areas, but can tolerate some light shade, normal moisture, and lean soils. In spring, thick stems surrounded by dark-green leaves quickly grow to a height of 6-8' -- but they can be cut back during the season to form shorter, multi-branched mounds. Great for pollinators, 'White Lightning' adds a bright splash that contrasts with asters and goldenrods for an impressive color mix. A perfect plant for the back of the border, the meadow, or for naturalizing in wet or periodically flooded areas.
