Viburnum nudum (Adoxaceae)
Possumhaw Viburnum, Smooth Witherod
One of our finest native Viburnums, Possumhaw is truly a four-season plant, offering flowers, fruit and wildlife habitat. In spring, glossy, dark-green leaves emerge, followed in early summer by umbels of small white flowers. Summertime clusters of fruit change from pinks, to blues, then finally purple-black. In fall, foliage turns burgundy-reds and purples. It has a rounded multistem habit, 6-10' tall and wide. In the wild it is usually found in wet areas and swamps, from sun to part shade.
