Symphyotrichum patens (Asteraceae)
Spreading Aster, Late Purple Aster

Native throughout the eastern US, Spreading Aster is found in open woods and forest edges, in full to part sun, particularly in rocky to sandy dry soils. It reaches 2-5' on slender stems lined with small dark green leaves. It has a long bloom period from late summer into fall, sporting small flowers of rich violet-blue petals around yellow centers. This Aster gives great fall color in hard to fill dry part-shade areas, or along a woodland edge. Plant with goldenrods and ironweeds for a fabulous fall show in naturalized areas or cottage gardens.
