Amorpha fruticosa

Full Sun
Attracts Butterflies

Amorpha fruticosa (Fabaceae)
(uh-MORE-pha froot-eh-COS-ah)
False Indigo

A delight in late spring to early summer long and narrow, lightly fragrant flower spikes of rich purple emerge, stippled with bright yellow-orange stamens that give them a fuzzy texture. Pinnate, compound leaves atop minimally branching stems give a fluttering, airy feel to this large nitrogen-fixing shrub. A riparian plant that prefers moist-to-wet soil in full sun, but is tough and adaptable; forms a small colony over time, especially in soggier sites. Amorpha becomes open underneath as it matures, allowing for underplanting or cut its woody stems to the ground in early spring for a bushier form. An unusual and alluring addition to your garden!
