Verbena stricta (Verbenaceae)
(ver-BEE-na STRIK-ta)
Hoary Vervain
This upright, clump-forming Verbena is found in dry fields and rocky margins over a wide range in the central US. Fine white hairs on its leaves and stems give it a frosted appearance, and are the source of its common name. Beefy stalks produce clusters of flower spikes, with bright-lavender blooms that ascend the columnar inflorescence from mid-to-late-summer. Plants have a tight, multi-stemmed form but can self-seed to naturalize; a tough and showy choice for dry problem-areas.
