Sorghastrum nutans 'Indian Steel' (Poaceae)
A major component of the US tallgrass prairie, along with Andropogon and Panicum, Indian Grass has a native range that encompasses most of the US. Tough and highly adaptive, it will grow in a range of soils but needs full sun. It is clump forming but can spread slowly by rhizomes once established. Usually 3-5' tall, but can reach up to 8’ under ideal conditions. Late summer blooms start off coppery and bright yellow, fade to a reddish purple, then to a late season light brown. Upright form provides winter interest. Foliage is a more glaucus blue-green than the species.
