Pityopsis graminifolia (Asteraceae)
A close relative of the Golden Asters (Chrysopsis ssp.), this Silkgrass is a widespread species growing throughout the South from TX into southern VA along roadsides, in open pineywoods and scrubby grasslands. Narrow stems and grass-like leaves are covered in fine white hairs, giving plants a shimmering silvery appearance; branching stalks are topped with bright-yellow daisies from late summer into fall. A tough-as-nails wildflower — site in lean-to-average well-drained soils in full sun. Evergreen plants spread via rhizomes to form small colonies; cut back in winter to tidy up before new growth emerges.
